The Five Classes of Contaminants and Usual Treatments.

There are five basic classes of contaminants in naturally-occouring ground water.

They are:

  • Dissolved Gasses – carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, methane, etc

(Aeration / Oxidization / Scavengers / etc.)

  • Suspended Solids – silt, dust, insoluble metal oxides, precipitated iron, manganese, sulphur, colloidal solids, etc…

(Oxidize / Particle Filtration)

  • Dissolved Organic Material – trihalomethanes (DBPs), synthetic organic chemicals, humic and fulvic acids and other dissolved non-ionic contaminants.

(AC Filtration / Distillation / Reverse Osmosis)

  • Dissolved Ionics (Salts) – heavy metals, arsenic, chloride, calcium, carbonates, magnesium, sodium, sulphate, etc…

(Cation Exchange / Demineralization)

  • Microorganisms – bacteria, viruses, protozoan cysts, algae, fungi and various others

(Disinfection / Distillation / UV Radiation)

There is no single water treatment technology available today that will effectively remove all of these contaminants!

Therefore, it is critically important to know and understand all of the contaminants in the water supply as well as their interactions with one another. It is only then, that an effective water treatment system can be set up and properly implemented.
